How lucky for him to find a career he loves.
Most people just work for money and hate their jobs.

Taking a nap!

Relax! It is free, no charge for mother.

The cost is about one third of Canada.

Slavery in Brazil

Slavery in Brazil - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Slavery in Brazil began in the 16th century, when the Portuguese Empire began to colonize the country. The enslavement of indigenous peoples, and later the large-scale importation of Africans, heavily shaped the country's social structure and ethnic landscape. During the colonial epoch and for over six decades after the 1822 independenceslavery[1] was a mainstay of the Brazilian economy, especially in mining, cotton, and sugar caneproduction. Brazil obtained an estimated 35% of all enslaved Africans traded in the Atlantic slave trade. More than 3 million Africans were sent to Brazil to work mainly on sugar cane plantations from the 16th to the 19th century, far more than were imported into North America. Slavery was finally abolished in Brazil on 13 May 1888. It was the last nation in the Western world to abolish the institution of slavery.

The African slaves in Brazil were not as fortunate as those in US and the Caribbean. Since North America is farther from Africa, the African slaves were treated better. Those in some Caribbean islands were the most fortunate as owners were absentees. They are left to live on their own. Because of the proximity of Brazil to Africa, the slaves were treated the worst. Women and men, even husbands and wives, were separated to prevent pregnancy. It was much cheaper to replace a slave in Brazil than in the US.

Capoeira - An Afro-Brazilian Martial Art

Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian martial art that incorporates dance, song, music and oral history. Its roots are to be found in Brazilian slave society, as well as - via the transatlantic slave trade - in central Africa.
Capoeira was born not as a fighting style, but as a hope of survival. A tool with which an escaped slave, completely unequipped, could survive in the hostile, unknown land and face the hunt of the capitães-do-mato, the armed and mounted colonial agents who were charged with finding and capturing escapees.

Itanhaém - Time Capsule

We are back in Campinas for two days now. This is the coolest summer I have in Brazil. It rains almost everyday.

Temperature is between 25 to 18 degree C, exactly like Vancouver summer but without the rain.

We were at the beach 3 times during our 11 day stay.

I took a video of our beach apartment.

All the furnitures are about as old as the apartment. The place was renovated about 26 years ago. Washing machine is bought on this trip.Adriana has been coming here since childhood. So are her children. It is a time capsule to her!

But this is high season. Children are having their summer holiday. Beach is crowded.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9vVqCkJi1Do&feature=youtu.be

I see mostly families at the beach, young children, teenagers, mom, pap and grannies with tummies. Few sexy Brazilian girls here. I suppose young people have their own beach to go to.
For many Brazilians, going to the beach is an annual event. Some of them, especially the children were disappointed by the rain.

Still our favorite restaurant with decent seafood and wi-fi, but not cheap! For two people, easily US$50 to $80.

My Chinese friends at the beach

We came to Campinas last night and will be leaving for Itanhaém tomorrow afternoon. This time for maybe 10 days.

Itanhaém used to be one of ten best destinations in San Paulo. Today it is a beach town for middle to lower class people. Most residences are old.

We do not have internet at home. I like you to meet these Chinese friends at Itanhaém. We have been friends for about 8 years.

Nice Chinese couple from Toi San, Canton

Here is another friend Ah Ming, also from Toi San

During 2012, Ah Ming opened his second pastelaria.

These are freshly baked by Ah Ming.

They taste better than the Brazilian shops.

With touch of Chinese flavor.

Relative helper here for 2 years, already speaking Portugese.

They also sell candies, cigarettes, beer, soda, snacks.

I always get a cup of ice cold freshly squeezed cane juice.
They still don~t let me pay.

Today, we head straight for the river. We are going to have fish for lunch.

We have been at this restaurant many times.
